DeVore proposes to end in-state tuition for undocumented students

February 25th, 2008, 4:28 pm · 5 Comments · posted by Amy Taxin

Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has co-authored a bill to end a program that awards in-state tuition to undocumented immigrant students and fund educational programs for National Guard members instead.

DeVore, R-Irvine, said - in a news story published in the Register’s sister paper Excelsior - that the state shouldn’t be paying to educate people who “could be deported tomorrow.”

Instead, his bill aims to provide new educational benefits to members of the California National Guard. (DeVore is a retired lieutenant colonel with the Army National Guard). State Sen. Lou Correa, D-Anaheim, said he opposed the proposal and that all students should be educated.

In-state tuition for illegal aliens should never have started in the first place. California should not be spending money to educate the citizens of other countries. Assemblyman Chuck DeVore has a great idea to use the money for the California National Guard. Of course, the democrat thinks there is an endless supply of money to educate the citizens of other countries. The democrat’s allegiance should be to this country and its citizens.

How does an “undocumented immigrant” get the opportunity to register at school in the first place?

  • Sick says:

For starters, many “undocumented immigrants” pay taxes just as
citizens and residents do. Hence, they should be allowed the
equal benefit to an education. Second, have any of you considered
the difficulties of living in the country of many of these undocumented
immigrants? Have you ever researched the bureaucratic process
it takes for anyone outside the U.S. to be allowed legal entrance?
While the ignorant American continues to live in their blissful ignorance
Many children are becoming adults with little opportunity of having
a guaranteed comfortable future. Maybe it’s time to forget selfishness
and have a little compassion for others because after all there is only
one race - the human race.

Makes sense to me. We should be supporting our troops not Illegal Invaders that demand social services without contributing to the tax base.

Sick, sounds like you are one of those desparate Dreamies.

Theoretically, if we were to follow your “we pay taxes too” argument, then I propose that only those who can show they have been paying taxes be allowed to get in-state. How’s that? You ok with that?

As to your argument about how hard it is to come here legally, well, sorry to burst your bubble but THAT IS THE POINT. The US does not want every Tom, Dick or Jose to just come here. This is the reason why we have an Immigration Code. We only want the best to come here, and USCIS vets them to make sure they will be CONTRIBUTING members of society, and not a burden on taxpayers. That is the reason they are vetted for criminal and medical backgrounds too.

Oh btw, in case you haven’t noticed, LEGAL IMMIGRATION INTO THE US — or any other country for that matter — IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT. Nobody has the right to demand that they be given US citizenship. NOBODY. It is up to us and us only; and if we say Sorry, you’re not what we want, then GET OVER IT AND STOP YOUR WHINING.

MORE POWER TO DEVORE!! Keep up the good work, Congressman! Where can I send a contribution check?
