Senators renew call to free jailed ex-border agents

California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn have renewed their plea to President Bush to release Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who are in jail for shooting a fleeing drug trafficker.
The two senators Monday sent Bush a letter, pointing out that the man who was shot at the U.S.-Mexico border, Aldrete Davila, pleaded guilty last week to transporting two loads of marijuana valued at a total of $2 million.
“As we have indicated previously, the penalty levied on these agents is excessive,” the senators wrote. “We believe that this is a case of prosecutorial overreaching, and to allow agents Ramos and Compean to serve over a decade in prison would represent a serious miscarriage of justice.”
The two former agents have been in prsion for more than a year and theĀ senators want Bush to commute their sentences.
Feinstein and Cornyn are the only two senators who have gotten so involved in this case. In the House, a larger group of lawmakers, spearheaded by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, hasĀ been pushing for the release of the two former jailed officers.

I agree with Dina. They should never have been prosecuted. It’s disgusting that we treat our citizens more harshly than illegal immigrant drug dealers.
I’m not saying that they did not make mistakes, but I don’t think over 10 years sentence is justified based on the circumstances. We have murderers and rapists that have done less time.

Maybe we should put Bush in the border without his ss service to dodge the same crap our BP puts up with. Only a few more months and we get a new CLOWN in the center ring

Wow! The worthless Dianne Feinstein who has presided over the illegal alien invasion of California actually wants to do something for a border patrol agent. Don’t strain yourself now Mam, we know you have more important things to do.

This whole thing was a travesty of justice. How you justify sending two border agents to prison for 11 and 12 years for trying to do the jobs they were hired to do? Apparently the Bush administration cares more about drug dealers than it does about law enforcement and protecting our borders.

I agree, Ramos and Compean should never have been prosecuted and imprisoned! Taking the side of an illegal alien drug smuggler is despicable!

Hopefully, the cells of Agents Ramos and Compean were just warmed up for Johnny Sutton and all those who were involved in putting the agents away. Rather than prison, they should have received medals. Illegal immigration is very profitable for those who aid and abet.

Hopefully the appeals court will rule shortly and reverse this judicial atrocity.
In order to fix the problem long-term, we need to see that Johnny Sutton and his band of crooked prosecutors are held accountable for their actions.

I believe in this case President Bush is bowing to the wishes of the Mexican government, which he almost always does when the issue concerns a Mexican national, illegal or not. If he really wanted to do the right thing, he would have pardoned these two Border agents long before this, and should have. Siding with a Mexican national drug runner and the Mexican government, over two American Border Patrol agents is just unacceptable to most americans, amazing.

I must say that I’m surprised to see Feinstein (Mrs. pro illegal immigration) supporting this effort. I wholeheartedly agree that these men should be freed, and never should’ve been in trouble for DOING THEIR JOBS.
Also…
Anyone wanting to do their part in pushing Congress to reinstate work on building the REAL border fence, here’s a link to all of the target representatives and their phone and fax numbers. If we start inundating them with faxes and/or calls, things may change. I know, doubtful, but it’s worth a shot…

Please do your part! We need to show them how strongly we feel about illegal immigration and the effects it’s having on our country!
